Melky Cabrera a San Francisco treat

Max Scherzer pitched into the seventh inning to outduel Josh Beckett and Delmon Young homered last night as the Detroit Tigers beat the Red Sox, 7-3, to avoid a four-game sweep in Boston.

Detroit went 10-14 during a stretch of 19 of 24 on the road and returns home for a three-game series against the Yankees beginning tonight.

"Going on the road sometimes is a good thing for the bonding aspect, but it will be nice to get back to Comerica,'' said Scherzer (5-3).

Young hit a solo homer in the eighth to make it 5-3 and an RBI single in the ninth. Prince Fielder had an RBI triple and a run-scoring single.

"I made some pitches when I needed to and I didn't make some other ones,'' Beckett said. "We kind of talk about this a lot: You're going to have five pitches in a game that you have to make, and I think I made three of them today. The other two, it cost me three runs in one inning."

Rockies 11, Astros 5: Carlos Gonzalez hit a three-run shot in the first inning -- giving him homers in four straight at-bats -- for host Colorado.

Gonzalez's 14th homer made him the first Rockies player to go deep in four consecutive at-bats. It was the 22nd time a major-leaguer has homered in four consecutive plate appearances and the 38th time for four straight official at-bats.

Gonzalez is 13-for-20 with six homers and 10 RBIs in his last five games. Marco Scutaro also homered for the Rockies, who had 15 hits.

Kemp back on DL

The Dodgers placed centerfielder Matt Kemp on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this month because of a left hamstring strain . . . The Rockies placed shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the 15-day DL because of a left groin strain . . . Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis has a hamate fracture of his right wrist and will undergo surgery.
