Twirling a maroon and gray rally towel in the air, Barry Lieberman cheered as Wellington C. Mepham High School scored a touchdown during its homecoming game on Saturday.

The game also served as a homecoming for Lieberman, 67, and his former classmate Marc Beilinson, 68, whose Class of 1963 celebrates its 50th anniversary this weekend.

“I was quarterback of the football team then and I remember our team defeated Calhoun 12-0,” said Lieberman, who said he scored both touchdowns during that game. “It feels good to be back to see our school winning yet again. This brings back so many memories.”

Clad in maroon and gray, fans filled the stands cheering loudly for the Pirates -- including a group of students with the words “Let’s Go Mepham Pirates” painted on their stomachs.

During halftime of Mepham’s 39-17 win over Calhoun, homecoming court members took a lap on the school’s track in a pirate ship float hauled by a truck. Julie Dijkstra, Sabrina Mastrangelo, Nicole Jacobovi and Brian Keohane, all 17, were on the float posing with the school’s pirate mascot.

Varsity football captain Chris Vento, 17, and his girlfriend, Dijkstra, captain of the cheerleading team, were crowned homecoming king and queen.

“It brings our school together,” Dijkstra said as Vento ran back onto the field to start the second half. “We’re seniors so this is our last homecoming and you can feel just how united we are. With our strong bond, we’re going to make this year count.”
