Wellington C. Mepham High School in Bellmore is Nassau County’s first-prize winner of the MSG Varsity/Cablevision Power to Learn “Charity Champions" program.

The students raised money for autism through fundraising events that included selling Autism Speaks bracelets, participating in Walk Now for Autism Speaks, and organizing a Battle of the Classes, which raised $5,035.

“The student body at W.C. Mepham High School got together for a great cause and demonstrated that volunteerism is alive and well in Nassau County,” said Don Clavin, Hempstead Town receiver of taxes, as he joined Trent Anderson, Cablevision vice president of education, Wednesday to present the school with $2,500 to be donated to Autism Speaks.

“This school year will be remembered for the terrific, giving spirit of our students and faculty,” said school Principal Michael Harrington. “Everyone went above and beyond what was expected of them.”
