The Detroit Tigers know that in the long run, Miguel Cabrera is impossible to replace. For the first 24 hours, though, they are doing pretty well.

J.D. Martinez homered and the Tigers scored eight runs for the second straight game, beating the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-3, yesterday in Detroit.

Cabrera will be sidelined with a left calf injury for at least six weeks after the Tigers placed the AL batting leader on the disabled list for the first time in his career. He is hitting .350 with 15 homers and 54 RBIs.

"It is a grade-3 calf strain, and it's probably going to be six weeks," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "When you lose the best hitter on the planet, it's a huge blow."

Grade 3 is the most severe of the strains.

In the last two seasons, Cabrera played through a sports hernia, a broken bone in his foot and bone spurs in his ankles.

"It's going to be tough without him, for sure," catcher Alex Avila said.

Red Sox 6, Astros 1: Clay Buchholz pitched a six-hitter and Mookie Betts drove in three runs as host Boston snapped Houston's five-game win streak.

White Sox 3, Orioles 2: Avisail Garcia robbed Chris Davis of a tying homer with a leaping catch in the ninth for host Chicago.

A's 2, Mariners 0: Rookie Kendall Graveman allowed five hits in seven innings to help hand Seattle ace Felix Hernandez (10-5) his first loss in Oakland in nearly seven years.

Cardinals 2, Padres 1: Jhonny Peralta broke an eighth-inning tie with a sacrifice fly as host St. Louis stopped its longest losing streak of the season at four games.
