Mill Neck votes to allow exceeding state tax cap

Mill Neck has become the latest North Shore village to adopt a local law permitting it to exceed a state-mandated tax cap if necessary.

The village board of trustees with a unanimous 5-0 vote at their meeting Tuesday passed a measure granting them the ability to override the 2 percent property tax levy limit.

Officials will try to keep to the cap but adopted the law to protect them “from all the unknowns” presented by the new state mandate, said clerk/treasurer Donna Harris.
The village’s fiscal year begins June 1.

Several of Mill Neck’s neighbors, including Brookville and Old Brookville, have passed similar local laws.

The villages of Upper Brookville and Matinecock have public hearings on the tax cap scheduled for their respective meetings, both set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
