Moises Sierra's power and arm help Jays top Rays

Moises Sierra homered and threw out Elliot Johnson at the plate for the final out to lead the Blue Jays to a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night in Toronto.

Jeff Mathis blocked the plate and tagged out Johnson when he tried to score on Carlos Peña's single to right. Intent on trying to knock the ball out of Mathis' glove, Johnson crashed face-first into the dirt around the plate, leaving him with cuts above and below his right eye, up and down his nose, above and below his lips, even on his right hand and knee.

"[Mathis] moved back toward their dugout a little bit so at the last second I couldn't quite get him," said Johnson, who broke Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli's right wrist in a collision in spring training in 2008. "I just barely got a piece of him and then the rest of my momentum went into the ground."

Edwin Encarnacion hit his 35th home run for Toronto.

Athletics 20, Red Sox 2: Ex- Boston players George Kottaras (two homers, five RBIs), Josh Reddick (28th homer, four RBIs) and Brandon Moss (homer, four RBIs) totaled four homers and 13 RBIs for host Oakland, which had 19 hits. Reddick's grand slam capped a nine-run seventh.

Tigers 7, White Sox 4: Delmon Young hit a three-run double in the seventh in Detroit.

Rangers 5, Indians 3: Ryan Dempster gave up two hits in six innings in Cleveland.

Angels 9, Mariners 1: Kendrys Morales (four RBIs) hit a three-run homer in the first for visiting Los Angeles.

Nationals 10, Cardinals 0: Gio Gonzalez (17-7) pitched a five-hitter and Ryan Zimmerman homered in Washington.

Phillies 8, Braves 5: Erik Kratz homered in the ninth to tie it and John Mayberry hit a three-run homer in the 10th for visiting Philadelphia.

Diamondbacks 4, Dodgers 3: Jason Kubel led off the top of the 11th with his 27th homer.

Cubs 6, Giants 4: Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer for host Chicago.-- AP
