It was one of the most uplifting moments in Long Island sports history: Bobby Nystrom exalts after beating Philadelphia Flyers goalie Pete Peeters with an overtime goal at the Nassau Coliseum, earning the Islanders their first Stanley Cup.

Thirteen years later, Long Island Rail Road station is the scene for one of the most heartbreaking moments in this region's history when a gunman fired upon passengers on the train.
