It's vacation season. You're ready, you've planned. You likely haven't thought of everything, though. If you're not careful, hidden vacation expenses can lead to a debt hangover that lasts for months. Here's a look at several "gotchas":
Tips. On cruises you tip everybody -- from cabin stewards to wait staff. That's because gratuities are automatically added to your bill and can easily total $300 on a 10-day cruise, says Terrance Zepke, author of "The Encyclopedia of Cheap Travel." Add this into your budget, or opt for a cruise where tipping is included.
Fees everywhere. Port charges average $500 and often aren't included in advertised rates. Just because you've bought your ticket doesn't mean you're done paying your airline, points out Jeff Klee, chief executive of CheapAir.com. Airlines charge for security fees, airport taxes, aisle seats, extra legroom, baggage fees and more. This can add $100. Taxes on hotel bills can be as much as 18 percent.
Cellphone charges. Careful with your cellphone, especially when using it overseas. "Turn off data roaming and take advantage of free Wi-Fi," says Manilo Carrelli, chief executive of Keku.com. "Update your voice mail message or turn it off. Many providers charge roaming fees when folks leave you voice messages."
Fight back. Look for hotel freebies on breakfast, Wi-Fi and parking.
You can't anticipate every cost, but if you win on some, you'll come out ahead.
