Money Fix: Tips on gym memberships

Working out can be a powerful way to take charge of an individual's well being. Make sure the contract for a gym doesn't work you over. (2009) Credit: AP
Another year, another resolution to get in shape, which for many people means signing up for a gym or health club membership.
While plenty of consumers have successful experiences with such venues, nearly 500 complaints about them were registered last year with the Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan New York. That's an 11 percent increase from 2009. So before suiting up for your workout, consider the following tips.
1. Know terms. Much is touted about introductory offers, but for ongoing costs and terms be prepared to dig out the details. One common complaint, according to the bureau, relates to automatic renewal of memberships. So, daunting though the contracts may be, it's essential for consumers to read them thoroughly and make sure all the terms and promises are in writing, says Brian Rauer, general counsel of the bureau.
2. Show up. Steer clear of signing up online or by phone, unless you've shown up, taken a tour and perhaps even made use of a guest pass. And don't succumb to "high-pressure sales pitches," said Claire Rosenzweig, the bureau's president and chief executive.
3. Opting out. Ask about the circumstances that would allow you to get out of the contract. And what would be the financial repercussions to you? What if a chain closes your preferred, close-by location? What if you move to another town or state? What if you become ill? What if the gym suddenly goes out of business? These are called "cancellation rights," and, again, get them in writing, says Rauer.
4. Learn more. To check out gyms and health clubs and find more questions to ask before joining, go to newyork.bbb.org. (Click here to link to it.)
