Montauk beach protesters pack town board meeting

Residents want the Army Corps of Engineers to stop work on placing thousands of sandbags on Montauk beaches.
Montauk residents turned out in force today to protest a controversial beach project.
The packed East Hampton Town Board work session was held at the Montauk Playhouse. The meeting was moved there because so many people were expected to attend.
Many locals want to stop the Army Corps of Engineers from tearing down Montauk dunes and replacing them with thousands of sandbags.
Two more opponents of the sandbag project were arrested on the beach today, trying to stop the Army Corps from continuing to work. That brings the total arrests to seven since work began.
Those against the project say the project will ruin the beach. Supporters say it is needed to protect the downtown.
