With the summer crowds and the traffic they create about to leave the Hamptons, state Department of Transportation officials are planning to resurface a busy three-mile stretch of Montauk Highway that serves as the western gateway to East Hampton Village.

The work will be done in early fall on the part of the two-lane Montauk Highway running between Stephen Hands Path and State Route 114.

State Assemb. Fred Thiele Jr. (I-Sag Harbor) said the road will be surface milled, repaired where needed and then repaved and re-marked.

State DOT officials said the work will be done during the week in nonpeak daylight hours.

Because the work will be bid as part of a larger contract, no cost or starting date for the project is currently available.
