THE BUDGET

School officials are proposing a $17,969,831 budget for 2010-11, an 8.16 percent increase over the current budget of $16,613,550. The current tax levy of $14,751,478 would rise to $16,197,520, an increase of 9.8 percent.

The proposed budget would raise school taxes on a typical house assessed at $5,000 to $2,563.75, an increase of 10.63 percent over the current $2,317.35.

The proposed budget includes a 6 percent increase in teacher salaries. The district has announced plans to cut summer school, summer reading and after-school programs, and reduce the staff by two teachers and one teacher's assistant.
