More Lindenhurst seniors may get tax break

The Village of Lindenhurst is holding a hearing Tuesday on a proposal to expand eligibility for seniors to receive a reduction in village taxes.

The state has recently altered the income requirements, said Shawn Cullinane, village administrator clerk-treasurer, and municipalities have the option of implementing the new eligibility requirements.

Under the proposed changes, residents 65 and over who have an annual income of $29,000 or less can get up to 50 percent off their village taxes; the sliding scale decreases to 5 percent for those with an income of up to $37,400, he said.

The village now allows seniors with an income of $21,500 or less to receive up to 50 percent off their village tax bill; the sliding scale decreases to 5 percent for those with an income of up to $29,000.

Tuesday’s hearing will be held at 2:30 p.m. at village hall.
