More shellfishing areas closed in Huntington

Additional shellfishing areas in the Town of Huntington were temporarily closed Thursday because of the presence of a marine biotoxin, state environmental officials said.
About 7,500 acres of shellfishing areas in Lloyd Harbor, Coast Guard Cove and Huntington Bay were closed after the state Department of Environmental Conservation detected saxitoxin in shellfish samples it collected.
The toxin causes paralytic shellfish poisoning, a serious and potentially fatal illness in those who consume affected shellfish.
The closures follow last week’s closures of Northport Bay, Centerport Harbor and Duck Island Harbor.
Shellfish harvesters can call the DEC’s hotline at 631-444-0480 for more information about the status of the closures.
