Morgan the hero in wild USA win

Alex Morgan picked a good time to break her scoring drought.

The American striker, who hadn't netted since the U.S. women's soccer team's first game of the Olympics, scored with a looping header in the third minute of stoppage time at the end of the second period of extra time to give Team USA a 4-3 win over Canada.

"I'm still in shock," Morgan told NBC Sports. "I don't care who scores as long as we friggin score."

Morgan's winner capped a dramatic -- and controversial -- tilt that the Americans never led until the 123rd minute.

Canada's Christine Sinclair thought she had done enough to send her team into the final when she completed a hat trick to give her team a 3-2 lead in the 73rd minute on a header off a corner kick. Canada was poised to end an 11-year winless run against the United States, but some questionable refereeing ensured that streak would continue.

An unusual decision to award a free kick inside the penalty box because of goalkeeper time-wasting led to an equally questionable handball call and penalty kick that Abby Wambach converted to tie the game, setting the stage for Morgan's heroics.

Megan Rapinoe scored twice for the United States when they trailed 1-0 and 2-1. The first goal was straight in from a corner kick, and the second was a 25-yard rocket from the right side.

The win sends the United States to the final, where they will take on Japan for the gold medal in a rematch of the 2011 Women's World Cup final, which the United States lost on penalty kicks.
