I was hoping to start this week’s Moriches Bay Buzz with a huge shout-out to the New York Jets, but if you watched Sunday’s disappointing game, you know that congratulations are not in order.

Being a glass-is-half-full kind of gal, however, I tried not to focus on the negative, but rather on the positive part of the Jets losing the game.

The good news: Since the Jets are not going to the Super Bowl, we won’t feel compelled to watch the “big game,” which means we can skip the incredibly fatty, but undeniably delicious junk food, as well as the overindulgence in beer that traditionally goes hand-in-hand with the Super Bowl. This, in turn, will make us feel better about ourselves, mentally and physically come Monday morning, which works for me!

Perhaps these events will keep you from thinking about the season’s end.

Beautifying Main Street: The Downtown Beautification Organization of Center Moriches is holding a public meeting on efforts to beautify Main Street. Improvements will begin this spring, the group says. The meeting is 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 9 at Center Moriches High School, 311 Frowein Rd., Center Moriches.

Winter suggestion No. 3: A trip to the Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge in Sag Harbor is sure to lift the winter blues. At 784 Noyack Rd., this lovely 187-acre sanctuary borders Noyack and Little Peconic bays and features habitats ranging from a sandy beach and lagoon, to forest, ponds and salt marshes. The sanctuary is home to myriad creatures, such as piping plovers and sea turtles. Hiking, fishing and wildlife observation are permitted, but perhaps one of the most enjoyable activities is having resident birds, such as black-capped chickadees, literally eating out of the palm of your hand. For information, call 631-286-0485, or visit the sanctuary's website.

Library book sale: The Friends of the Center Moriches Free Public Library invite all to a Winter Book Sale on Friday, Jan. 28, and Saturday, Jan. 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 631-878-0940 for details.

Annual Chinese auction: The Center Moriches PTA Chinese Auction is just a week away, and believe me when I tell you that you won’t want to miss it! The auction is slated for Feb. 5 in the Center Moriches High School gymnasium. Doors open at 5 p.m. A $10 admission fee at the door gets you a ticket and 25 raffle tickets. Prizes will be called at 7 p.m. Auction items include a Nook, an American Girl doll, and tickets to "David Letterman." For more information, call PTA president Jeanine Barr at 631-874-8251, or visit the Center Moriches Union Free School District website, centermoriches.k12.ny.us, and click on the Parent Teacher Association link.

Blood drive: The East Moriches PTO is sponsoring a Blood Drive from 2:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 4 at East Moriches Elementary School on Montauk Highway in East Moriches. Free raffles and baby-sitting will be available for participants. Call Sue Kruk at 631-874-3135 for more information.
