Mosque is holding interfaith 9/11 event

Muslims, Christians and Jews are invited to come together on Saturday for an interfaith memorial service for the victims of 9/11 on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

The Long Island Muslim Society, a community organization and mosque in East Meadow, is partnering with the Westbury-based Islamic Center of Long Island to host the interfaith gathering, which seeks to foster unity among people of all faiths, said Rahat Hossain, a board member of the East Meadow society. The service will be held at 4 p.m. at the East Meadow mosque, 475 East Meadow Ave.

“All faiths lost people on that day and we just want to be together, remember them and honor them,” Hossain said.

Participants will include the Rev. Thomas Goodhue of the Long Island Council of Churches; the Rev. Mark Lukens of the Bethany Congregational Church in East Rockaway; Rabbi Michael A. White of Temple Sinai in Roslyn Heights and Imam Shamsi Ali of the Jamaica Muslim Center.

The event, which will also honor members of the East Meadow Fire Department, is open to the public.
