The MTA has announced that hoverboards are banned from buses, subway trains and stations.

The MTA said in a statement released at its board meeting Wednesday that the self-balancing boards’ batteries “pose the risk of fire.” Several reports of exploding hoverboards have led the federal government to issue an alert about the devices’ batteries, the MTA said.

Hoverboards, while one of the most popular holiday gifts this past year and a hit among celebrities, are already considered illegal on the streets under state law.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton has said anyone who uses a hoverboard is “out of their mind.”
