MTA: Worker killed by subway train in Queens

A New York City Transit worker from Queens was struck and killed by a subway train Wednesday morning in Astoria, police said.

Louis Moore, 58, of Hollis, was found unconscious on the track's roadbed just after 3:20 a.m., the NYPD said yesterday.

A Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman, Deirdre Parker, said earlier that the victim was a signal maintainer who was working on the tracks near the 46th Street Station when he was struck by a Parsons-Archer-bound E train at 3:21 a.m.

Police and emergency medical personnel responded at 3:23 a.m. to a 911 call and found Moore on the tracks "unresponsive." The NYPD said Moore was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moore's death is the first fatal accident involving a transit worker on the job since a maintenance supervisor, James Knell, fell onto an exposed third-rail on April 26, 2010, the MTA said.

It's also the first death involving a track worker being struck by a train in six years -- since Marvin Franklin was killed April 29, 2007.

Police and the MTA said the investigation is ongoing. The MTA said it also will be the subject of a formal board of inquiry by the New York City Transit Office of System Safety.
