N. Hempstead expands disposal program
The Town of North Hempstead is adding another kind of household waste that can be accepted in its hazardous waste disposal program — personal documents to be shredded and recycled.
The town’s next Stop Throwing Out Pollutants collection will be on June 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Solid Waste Management Authority, 802 West Shore Rd., in Port Washington. The event is held four times a year.
Starting Saturday, residents can also dispose of paper documents, CDs, DVDs, X-rays, pill bottles and credit cards at no charge. The paper will be shredded and shipped for recycling, said Supervisor Jon Kaiman.
Other types of waste the town accepts include aerosol cans, electronic waste, household batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs, air conditioning refrigerants, antifreeze, paints and weed killers.
Residents can also dispose of unwanted and expired pharmaceuticals. All medications — whether prescription or over-the-counter, pet medicine, vitamins, supplements, inhalers or medicated ointments — must be in their original containers.
