N. Hempstead planning new rugby program
As some schools cut back on sports programs, North Hempstead is planning a new coed American flag rugby summer program for kindergarten to 12th-grade students.
The program will be held in June and July at John D. Caemmerer Park in Albertson.
“Introducing non-contact flag rugby to youngsters gives them a lifelong sport they can take with them anywhere in the world,” program founder Alan Whelan said.
The game is played on a short field, where every player can pass, run with the ball and score. The town program will feature weekday practices, with tournaments on Saturday mornings.
The town is seeking additional coaches for the program. To sign up or for more information, contact Whelan at northhempsteadrugby@yahoo.com.
