The Town of North Hempstead is selling biodegradable paper yard refuse bags to residents to reduce the use of plastic bags.

The bags are for grass and leaves and, once filled, the 30-gallon bags, which hold as much as 50 pounds of debris, can be placed curbside on designated collection days.

They cost $2 for five bags and can be bought at the Solid Waste Management Authority building at 802 W. Shore Road and at the Aquatic Activity Center at Michael J. Tully Park, at 1801 Evergreen Ave.

For more information, town residents can call 311, or 516-869-6311 if outside town boundaries.
