Plans are under way to develop a 24-hour fitness center in New Hyde Park, which would take over a vacant King Kullen, after the Town of North Hempstead gave it site plan approval on Wednesday.

The Ultimate Fitness Center will occupy the former supermarket, a 37,000-square-foot location on 2020 Jericho Tpke.

The New Hyde Park site marks an expansion for the West Coast chain, which has four locations in California and one in Hawaii. The gym offers classes for adults and young children, as well as training in the mixed martial arts.

Jim Booth, a New Hyde Park resident, expressed concern about the size of the gym and its overnight hours during a public hearing at Wednesday’s town meeting.

“Is this going to be ... like an LA Fitness, where you can’t even get into that parking lot?” Booth asked the town board. “Is that going to be a problem with a 37,000-square-foot gym?”

Representatives from the gym said there would be no such problems, adding that the gym would expect deliveries from trucks less frequently than the supermarket.

Adam Sedlack, who is senior vice president of the chain, said he expects the gym to open next spring.
