Valley Stream South’s DeAnna Martin, Chibugo Obichere each get two titles at Class B meet
Two hours, two victories — not a bad night for DeAnna Martin. The junior who, along with sprinter Chibugo Obichere has put together a strong season for Valley Stream South, won two events within the opening two hours of the Nassau Class B championship Wednesday night at St. Anthony’s.
Martin took the 1,000 meters in 3:01.65 and the 600 meters in 1:38.12. Obichere, the other half of South’s dynamic duo, won the 55 meters in 7.26 seconds and the 55-meter hurdles in 8.16.
Cold Spring Harbor’s Fiona Haegeland led off the meet with an 11:03.95 victory in the 3,000 meters.
In the field, Valley Stream North’s Juel Charles won the shot put, tossing 40 feet, 5 1⁄4 inches. Charles entered the meet with the farthest throw on Long Island with a 42-11 in December, according to milesplit.com.
On the boys side, North Shore’s Jack Rosencrans won the 3,200 meters in 9:52.89. Rosencrans made waves in the fall as Nassau’s top cross country runner.
Valley Stream North, which has won the last four boys county titles, took home some hardware as well. Shane Johnson won the 600 meters in 1:28.04, outpacing four other runners who each finished milliseconds apart. Bellmore JFK’s Matthew Baker was second in 1:28.28, Roosevelt’s Sharif Brown was third in 1:28.67, Clarke’s Michael Zanni was fourth in 1:28.70, and Malverne’s Rashard Teachey fifth in 1:28.81.
