Kevan M. Abrahams says his district office is still inundated daily with calls from residents battered by the economic aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including job losses and trouble making mortgage and rent payments.
But as the legislature’s minority leader, Abrahams, 47, of Freeport, is also tasked with the bigger picture. He vows to push for improvements in the county's police-reform plan with an eye toward an independent inspector general or civilian review board. He praises police outreach in recent months but says "interaction has to take place" regarding the hard parts of community relations.
Abrahams urges procedural reforms that would assure worthy measures from all members get debated and get a vote. That's unlikely to happen unless Democrats win the majority and decide to make such a change.
Republican Elton E. McCabe Jr., 55, of Uniondale, vows to hear all sides of issues but comes up light on specifics.
Newsday endorses Abrahams.
Nassau Legislative District 1 covers Uniondale, Roosevelt, parts of Freeport and East Meadow.
