Arnold W. Drucker has established himself as a pragmatic and passionate legislator willing to think outside the box.

That has been the case from his work on school bus cameras, more housing options, and better sidewalks to his fights to discourage tobacco use and vaping among young Long Islanders and thereby improve the county's health. The 64-year-old Plainview Democrat is also trying to attack the lack of diversity among Nassau County police officers, pushing for a micro credentialing program at Nassau Community College that would allow those interested in criminal justice careers to get a "certificate" that would be worth credits on the police entrance exam. It’s refreshing to see lawmakers try new solutions for our ingrained problems.

His opponent, Plainview Republican Daniel Alter, 47, is a professor of restorative dentistry at New York City College of Technology who does not have Drucker’s granular knowledge of major county issues.

Newsday endorses Drucker.

Nassau Legislative District 16 covers Roslyn Heights, Old Westbury, Jericho, Plainview.
