In the difficult and ongoing conversation about police reform, Siela A. Bynoe has emerged as a crucial voice, whether advocating for a body camera program for Nassau police or pushing for first responders to improve the way they deal with mental health calls.

Bynoe, 54, of Westbury, knows that policing can be enhanced in Nassau, even as law enforcement continues to deal with quality-of-life and gang issues. She also is focused on development at the Nassau Hub and is in tune with the region’s needs for housing and infrastructure.

Her Republican opponent, Harold H. Germain, 33, of New Cassel, works in information technology and has not formulated strong opinions on some big issues like Hub development. He also expressed troubling COVID-19 vaccine views, declining to say whether he had been vaccinated and, when asked whether he’d encourage constituents to get vaccinated, saying only he’d "encourage them to follow the facts."

Newsday endorses Bynoe.

Nassau Legislative District 2 covers Lakeview, Hempstead, East Garden City, New Cassel and Hempstead.
