Two years ago, the Newsday editorial board called Republican Howard J. Kopel "very quiet."
Little has changed.
Kopel, 70, of Lawrence, rightly points to county finances as a legitimate concern, often providing a smart, nuanced perspective, and he recognizes his district's infrastructure and road improvement needs. But the six-term incumbent unfortunately falls back on familiar tropes, complaining of overdevelopment and assessments, incorrectly suggesting the unhappiness he's heard about tax increases means "there's got to be something wrong."
East Rockaway Democrat Lisa Daniels, 55, first ran against Kopel in 2013. An attorney, she says she'd be a steady and active presence in the district who would focus on constituent services, small-business needs, and a more holistic approach to development. She points to drainage and flooding issues and says the area must do more to be ready for the next big storm.
Newsday endorses Daniels.
Nassau Legislative District 7 covers Cedarhurst, Woodmere, Hewlett Bay Park, East Rockaway, Rockville Centre, Oceanside.
