Nassau County is looking to upgrade the Nickerson Beach Recreational Facility in Lido Beach with more cabanas, expanded campgrounds and a new mini-golf course.

The county issued a request for proposals earlier this month for design, engineering and construction administration services related to the upgrade, which also includes a new camp store with toilets, additional parking and other improvements.

The cabanas are a money maker, which is why the county hopes to add more on the east and west terraces.

“The Nickerson cabanas have stood since the early to mid-60's,” said Michael Martino, the county’s public works department spokesman. “Cabanas generate revenue and provide taxpayers with a return on their investment. These dollars will be used to help hold the line on county property taxes.”

The park features a skating area, basketball and volleyball courts, climbing walls, grills and benches, and yearly maintenance is performed at the site.

Proposals are due by 3 p.m. Sept. 27 to Shila Shah-Gavnoudias, P.E., Commissioner, Department of Public Works, 1194 Prospect Ave., Westbury, NY 11590; Attention: Jonathan Lesman.
