Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano announced Monday that the county police department will receive a $915,000 state grant to help with its High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane patrols on the Long Island Expressway.

“We’ve all dealt with motorists who blatantly disregard the law by entering and exiting HOV lanes in unsafe places,” Mangano said in a statement. “These funds will help provide ongoing patrols of the HOV lanes .?.?. while improving traffic safety.”

Mangano spokeswoman Katie Grilli-Robles said Mangano asked the police to seek the state Department of Transportation grant. It will be used to help plan, schedule, implement and manage the HOV Lane Enforcement Program and to provide monthly enforcement schedules and assignments to the department.

It also will assist with instituting special operations support for pavement sweeping and striping and other highway maintenance, and for providing reimbursement of operating costs for vehicle usage for the HOV lane enforcement.

The program will be monitored and evaluated for its effectiveness.
