Nassau redistricting panel hearings

The advisory panel tasked with recommending new 10-year district lines for the Nassau legislature has scheduled its first round of public hearings across the county.

The Temporary Districting Advisory Commission will hold its first meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. at Long Beach City Hall, 1 W. Chester St.

Subsequent meetings will be held on:

Monday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Elmont library, 700 Hempstead Tpke. in Elmont.

Thursday, Sept. 27, at 6 p.m. at Landing Elementary School, McLoughlin Street in Glen Cove.

Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. at the Nassau County Legislative Chambers, 1550 Franklin Ave. in Mineola.

Over the summer, the panel’s five Democratic members held their own public hearings about the new legislative map.

The advisory commission, with five appointees from the Republican majority and five from the Democratic minority, will submit new lines for Nassau’s 19 legislative districts based on the 2010 census.

The GOP-controlled legislature can adopt, reject or revise the commission’s recommendations.
