Nassau residents move closer to homeownership

Five applicants moved a step closer this week to being able to buy  five affordable homes in Inwood when their names were drawn in a lottery.

During the  lottery, held Tuesday by the Nassau Office of Community Development and the Long Island Housing Partnership, the names of the 44 applicants were drawn and ranked, 1 to 44. Each had applied by Sept. 30 for the opportunity to buy one of the homes.

If the first five applicants don’t qualify, the housing partnership will move down the list. To qualify, an applicant must earn at or below 80 percent of the area median income, have had no ownership interests in the past three years and meet other program guidelines, including qualifying for a mortgage.

The homes, which are being offered through the Partnership for New Homes at Inwood, consist of four single-family attached town houses and one two-family house.

The town houses, on Harris Avenue, have three bedrooms and 1½ baths and are priced at $157,563. The two-family home on Lawrence Avenue has three bedrooms, 1½ baths and a 2-bedroom rental apartment. It is priced at $213,022.
