Nassau's boys lacrosse players of the week

Every Tuesday this season, Newsday's Will Sammon picks the top five Nassau boys lacrosse performers of the week. The list below takes into account games played from March 15-25. Suggestions and frustrations are appreciated, expected and welcome. Nice things can be said, too.

The Syracuse-bound midfielder had four goals to spur Oceanside to a come-from-behind victory over Hewlett in the team’s non-conference opener. With the second game of the season tied at 5 and slightly more than a minute remaining in overtime, Schwasnick scored an unassisted goal to give Oceanside the win. He also scored the tying goal with a little over two minutes left in the third. Schwasnick finished with four goals.

Crawley opened the season with four goals and two assists in the season-opening win over Locust Valley. He then propelled Port Washington to a non-league win over South Side by scoring five goals. The senior attackman had four goals to lead Port Washington to a third win against Waubonsie Valley (Ill.).

Jericho did not receive much love in the preseason coaches poll, landing a No. 11 ranking out of 14 teams in Conference II. Regardless, Starr has come out of the gate strong. In the season-opening win against Floral Park, Starr scored four goals. Three days later, Starr scored the game-winner goal off an assist from Chandler Kirby with 33 seconds left in regulation to beat Mineola, 10-9. Again, he finished with four goals.

In the season-opening loss to Garden City -- perhaps the best public school boys lacrosse team in Nassau -- Feit recorded 14 saves and constantly altered the routes and angles of attempted shots. In the game against Smithtown West, a Suffolk powerhouse, the John Hopkins-bound goalie again had 14 saves.

Atop Newsday’s leaderboard for points so far this season is Patrey (18), an attackman on a team that coaches predicted would finish near the bottom of Conference II. Patrey scored eight goals in Great Neck South’s 14-5 win over Wheatley on March 21. For good measure, he also added two assists in the game.
