The story about the Nassau County Career & Job Fair reveals a fundamental flaw in Long Island's economy ["Job fair draws more seekers than expected," News, June 9]. It is a bad sign that the employers mentioned are in fields such as finance, insurance and personal services that do not bring in money to a community. These firms provide worthwhile services, but do not themselves bring wealth to us. Mostly, they take wealth from us or recirculate it locally.

Selchow & Richter used to produce Scrabble and other games here; Grumman once made aircraft. Their products went out to the world and brought money here. The trend to increase the number of jobs that consume wealth without a corresponding increase in jobs that acquire wealth is economically unviable. More trouble lies ahead.
