Pennsylvania6 wounded in shooting
A shooting early Friday at a building outside Pittsburgh that police described as a speakeasy left six people wounded, and investigators were searching for a shooter or shooters. All the victims were men in their early 20s, investigators said. Clairton, Pennsylvania, police were trying to determine the legitimacy of the business where the gunfire erupted about 3:30 a.m. One victim was airlifted and two victims were taken by ambulance to a trauma center, a county emergency dispatch commander said.
california$139M to settle abuse case
The Los Angeles Unified School District will pay $139 million to end remaining litigation involving an elementary school teacher convicted of committing numerous lewd acts on his students, according to the settlement announced Friday. The deal involving 81 students puts a legal end to the saga that began when Miramonte Elementary School teacher Mark Berndt was arrested in 2012. Plaintiff's lawyers had planned to present evidence that the school district was aware of sexual misconduct by Berndt over three decades but failed to act.
New JerseyJudge denies sports betting
A federal judge ruled yesterday that New Jersey cannot partially lift a prohibition on sports betting in an effort to boost the state's struggling horse racing and casino industries. The decision from U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp was expected since the judge had ruled similarly in the past.
