Teen survives flight in wheel well

A 16-year-old boy stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from San Jose, Calif., to Maui, surviving the trip halfway across the Pacific Ocean unharmed despite frigid temperatures and lack of oxygen, the FBI said last night. FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu said the teen was questioned after he was found on the tarmac with no identification. Simon said security footage in San Jose showed the teen hopped a fence to get to Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45 yesterday. He ran away from his family in Santa Clara, Calif., and has been referred to child protective services, Simon said.

The rig will drill boreholes up to 200 feet deep along the slide's upper crest to gather samples that should reveal the composition of the formation. The slide, discovered April 4, has destroyed a house, buckled roadways and looms over a cluster of businesses.
