ArizonaCops: 5 found shot to death

Police were investigating the shooting deaths of five people found at a Phoenix apartment complex. Sgt. Tommy Thompson said officers responded to a shots-fired call at the complex about 9 a.m. yesterday. Television station KNXV reported officers entered the first apartment and found the bodies of four people. Two dead dogs were found. In a second apartment, Thompson said, officers found the body of the suspected gunman. Police did not say what prompted the shootings.

MichiganDetroit bets on comeback

As Detroit moves through bankruptcy, local and state leaders are proposing expensive new projects, including a hockey arena and a mass transit line. The developments would cost $800 million and bet at least $300 million in future tax revenue on an effort to attract people to a place residents have been fleeing for 60 years. Skeptics say the plans are risky for a city with so much debt it can't fund simple services.

A growing number of military parents want to end the age-old tradition of switching schools for their kids. They've embraced home schooling, and are finding support on bases, which are providing resources for families and opening their doors for home schooling cooperatives and other events. Military families move on average nearly every three years. The transition can be tough for children, and home schooling can make it easier, advocates say.
