RHODE ISLAND / 5 killed, including baby, in house fire
A house fire that officials said might have simmered undetected for hours Saturday killed five people, including a 7-month-old and her mother. Firefighters found the victims on the second floor of a single-family house, Warwick Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan said. State Fire Marshal Jack Chartier said the blaze likely started in a gap between the first and second floor, or a gap in the second floor ceiling, and burned slowly.
WYOMING / False online post may have led to rape
Authorities say a Wyoming woman was assaulted at her front door, raped at knifepoint and left bound on the floor, and they say one of the men charged in the brutal attack claimed that he thought it was invited. Ty Oliver McDowell, 26, is charged with carrying out the rape. Jebidiah James Stipe, 27, the woman's ex-boyfriend, is accused of posing as the victim online and claiming she harbored a rape fantasy. The Casper woman had complained to the Natrona County Sheriff's Department that someone had made a false Craigslist posting about her.
ALASKA / Eagle gets man-made beak
An Alaska dentist has given a bald eagle a unique beak - using a temporary crown, sticky poster putty and yellow highlighter. The bird was found in December with severe damage to its beak, apparently from fishing line that wrapped around it and started cutting into it. Cindy Palmatier at the Bird Treatment and Learning Center says staff turned to dentist Kirk Johnson, who patched up the beak with material used to make temporary crowns for people. The "crown" is being held on with poster putty, and Johnson used a highlighter to give it a yellow tint. The bird center says the eagle won't be able to return to the wild.
