GOP senators condemn slide showing Obama as 'Joker'
Two GOP senators condemned a presentation at a Republican National Committee fundraiser that depicted President Barack Obama as the Joker, the clown villain from the "Batman" movies.
"There's no excuse for that type of stuff," Orrin Hatch of Utah said yesterday on NBC's "Meet the Press." "It shouldn't have happened," he said, adding that "some junior guy" was responsible.
The 72-slide PowerPoint presentation was made Feb. 18 by RNC finance director Rob Bickhart to donors at a party retreat in Boca Grande, Fla., according to Politico.com, which reported the story last week.
A hard copy of the presentation has the word "socialism" under a picture of Obama in the likeness of the Joker, according to Politico.
The same page positioned a caricature of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, next to a drawing of Cruella de Vil, the villainess from the film "101 Dalmatians," the Politico document shows.
The presentation also contained a picture of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, next to Scooby Doo, a cartoon dog with a propensity for being easily frightened, according to the Politico document.
"That sort of thing is certainly not helpful," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said yesterday on ABC's "This Week." "I don't like it and I don't know anybody who does."
