The leader of an effort to build a cultural center including a mosque near the site of the Sept. 11 terror attacks in New York City is to speak at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill later this week.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is to deliver a lecture on American citizenship at UNC-Chapel Hill on Wednesday evening. Abdul Rauf is also scheduled to speak at Duke University on Thursday.

The Virginia-based Christian Action Network opposes the New York proposal and plans a discussion and candlelight walk to the hall where Abdul Rauf will be speaking.

UNC says Abdul Rauf is being paid $20,000 for his address. He is not raising money for the cultural center during the visit.
