Gun-rights advocate targets Weiner scandal

A pro-gun-rights foe of New York Sen. Charles Schumer's bill to expand background checks took aim at New York political scandals to make a point last week.

"If politicians want universal background checks, we should start with them," said Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, a nonprofit based in Bellevue, Wash.

Gottlieb sent out an email noting that New York's state lawmakers just passed strict gun control laws, but "we have had example after embarrassing example of public officials being charged with violating various laws . . . Does anyone think former Congressman Anthony Weiner, who had to quit his post over a lewd email scandal, should clear a mental health screening to buy a gun?"-- Tom Brune
