(AP) — An Idaho State University physics professor says he will develop technology to detect bombmaking materials hidden in cargo shipments now that he's received paperwork needed to finalize a U.S. patent.

Phil Cole says the patent gives him exclusive rights to a bomb-detecting method that uses high-energy electron beams to probe material stored deep in cargo shipments.

Cole began working at ISU in 2004. He began researching the bomb-finding plan in 2002 when he worked at the University of Texas in El Paso.

Cole says he applied for the patent about seven years ago, and will share 15 percent of the patent rights with his former employer.

He says he has continued to research the project at home while waiting for the patent.
