A Marine Corps veteran says he was terrified as he helped his wife deliver their daughter on the side of a Southern California freeway.

The Orange County Register reports 29-year-old Sandra Vilchez was on the way to her mother's home when she delivered 11-pound, 6 ounce baby Savannah early Saturday.

Vilchez began having contractions that grew stronger quickly. When she realized she wouldn't make it, her husband, 35-year-old Bolivar Vilchez, pulled over and ran to the passenger side of their Chevy Tahoe to help.

As he phoned firefighters for help, their fourth child was born. Firefighters arrived soon afterward and helped cut the cord.

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Shane Sherwood says roadside births are more common than thought.

Another woman also gave birth on a different freeway shoulder last October.
