CALIFORNIA / 280-plus border arrests

San Diego County sheriff's officials say more than 280 people have been arrested in a crackdown on gangs and drug and human smuggling at the U.S.-Mexican border. Sheriff Bill Gore said Monday about 165 pounds of marijuana, 21 pounds of methamphetamine, 6 pounds of cocaine, heroin and weapons were seized.

OREGON / Drug boss gets 30 years

The Mexican kingpin of one of the biggest drug organizations in Oregon history has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. Authorities say Jorge Ortiz-Oliva, 40, oversaw three "super" methamphetamine labs in Marion County and marijuana plantations on secluded public lands in several states. More than 40,000 plants were seized from one site in Oregon. He was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown.

NEVADA / Pataki pans health deals

Former New York Gov. George Pataki says the Obama administration's health care reforms would not have become law without the "corrupt deals" Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) cut to pass them against the will of most Americans. The Republican Pataki assailed Reid at a rally with about 150 people in Reno on Monday as part of a campaign to build support for repeal of the reforms.

NATIONWIDE / Fort Hood killings probed

A Senate committee has subpoenaed the Obama administration for information on last year's mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. Lawmakers have suggested the administration may be covering up critical details. The Defense Department has said it doesn't want to compromise the prosecution of Army Maj. Nidal Hasan.

NATIONWIDE / 10 still charged in Haiti

The Haitian judge investigating 10 U.S. missionaries accused of kidnapping a busload of children out of the country says no decision has been made on whether to drop any charges. The State Department said last week charges had been dropped against nine of them.
