WASHINGTON: DEA killed pilot, U.S. admits
Two U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents shot and killed the pilot of a suspected drug flight that crashed last week while being chased by government aircraft, a U.S. official said. At the time, officials said they found cocaine on the plane that went down in eastern Honduras. They said one pilot died in the July 3 incident, but did not say how. DEA spokeswoman Dawn Dearden said Sunday that when police arrived at the scene they found the two pilots. She said one was arrested and the other shot dead by the DEA agents after he ignored an order to surrender and made a threatening gesture. It was the second time a DEA agent has killed someone in Honduras since the agency began deploying agents several years ago to accompany local authorities on drug raids.
MICHIGAN: Romney going to Olympics
Mitt Romney is planning a trip to Britain and Israel ahead of the Republican National Convention in August. A party official in Elk Rapids, Mich., said the presidential candidate will attend the opening ceremonies July 27 of the Olympics in London. Then he'll head to Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Romney's advisers are also considering plans for him to visit other countries in Europe. Romney speaks to the NAACP's annual convention on Wednesday and is planning a Thursday fundraiser with former Vice President Dick Cheney.
NATIONWIDE: The GOP hopeful's finances
Democrats launched coordinated attacks against Mitt Romney, intensifying calls for the presidential candidate to explain offshore bank accounts and release tax returns. The line of attack, dismissed by the Romney campaign as an "unfounded character assault," follows new questions about Romney's personal wealth, which could exceed $250 million. "He's the first and only candidate for the president of the United States with a Swiss bank account, with tax shelters, with tax schemes that involve so many foreign countries," Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said on CBS' "Face the Nation."
