HAWAII: A GOP win for Congress

Hawaii's newest member of Congress hopes to be sworn in this week after his special election victory Saturday. Republican Charles Djou won solidly to fill the vacant 1st Congressional District seat. His predecessor, Democrat Neil Abercrombie, resigned to run for governor. Democrats predict Djou will lose the seat in November when he'll face only one Democrat, not the two he beat on Saturday.

CONNECTICUT: Bill Clinton's fender bender

A van carrying former President Bill Clinton was hit from behind on the Merritt Parkway on Sunday as he was on his way to deliver the Class Day speech at Yale University, state police said. Traffic was at a near standstill just north of New Haven because of another accident when a vehicle struck the Secret Service van carrying Clinton at a low rate of speed. Clinton was unhurt and he went on to give his address to Yale seniors.

CALIFORNIA: Slain wife's mate returns

A former "Survivor" producer wanted for questioning in Mexico about his wife's death has returned to Los Angeles County. Attorney Richard Hirsch said Sunday his client, Bruce Beresford-Redman, who has not been charged with a crime, had no legal obligation to remain in Mexico. The body of his wife, Monica, was found in April in a sewer at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancún. His passport had been confiscated and Mexican police had described him as a suspect. Beresford-Redman reported his wife missing, saying he last saw her when she went shopping. The body showed signs of asphyxiation and of a blow to the head.

MASSACHUSETTS: Man sucked into machine

A cleaning man was sucked into a machine at a sausage-making company in Danvers. The man was cleaning the vacuum-type machine used to season the food at DiLigui Sausage Co. Police said the man's head and shoulders became stuck in the machine after it somehow activated. He showed no obvious of trauma, but was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
