CALIFORNIA: Teacher says she was target
The nursing director at a college where seven people were killed said Wednesday she believes the gunman was targeting her over a financial dispute, but she was elsewhere at the time. "I think he was looking for me. I have that weight on my shoulders . . . ," Ellen Cervellon told The Associated Press, her voice quavering. A portrait of suspect One L. Goh, 43, as an angry, unstable man at Oikos University in Oakland emerged in his first court appearance Wednesday. He was charged with seven counts of murder and three of attempted murder.
MICHIGAN: Evictee, 101, back in home
Texana Hollis, 101, was allowed back tearfully Wednesday into the home her husband bought after World War II, seven months after her eviction. Foreclosure forced Hollis from the home where she'd spent six decades of her life, then federal officials wouldn't let her move back in because of its dilapidated condition. Detroit Free Press columnist Mitch Albom and his charity stepped in, and persuaded volunteers and businesses to do the same. "God bless everyone who had a hand in this," Hollis said. Albom and his charities helped renovate the house after buying it from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He spent $30,000, much of it his own, and 100 volunteers put in new flooring, drywall, appliances and even a portion of the roof. "I promised Texana that all she has to do is just . . . give us another 101 years," he said after pushing Hollis up a wheelchair ramp into the home. "She will never lose this house again."
TENNESSEE: Review of addicted judge
A judge addicted to prescription drugs was having sex and buying pills during courtroom breaks during his final two years on the bench, an investigation found. His behavior has called into question many of the cases he presided over. People didn't realize Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner, 64, had a problem until he stepped down from the bench and pleaded guilty in March 2011 to a single count of official misconduct.
