NEVADA: 1 dies, 1 survives in desert

A 76-year-old diabetic survived 10 days in the desert by melting snow, but a friend ventured away to get help and died. James Klemovich and Laszlo Szabo, 75, were on a lonely road with no cellphone service when their car got stuck, Klemovich's wife, Joanne, said Thursday in Littleton, Colo. They lit flares and started fires. They used a towel to strain ditch water and snow into water bottles. After four or five days, Szabo left for help. Tuesday, Joanne Klemovich learned that her husband had been found by military personnel in training exercises. Szabo, of Lovelock, Nev., was found dead a mile and a half away.

MICHIGAN: No anti-gov't plot, judge finds

A militia leader and his son pleaded guilty Thursday to possessing a machine gun, giving prosecutors their only gain in a domestic terror trial that was upended when the judge dismissed charges of plotting war against the government. Hutaree leader David Stone told reporters he was a "stand-up true American patriot" whose anti-government comments and bravado about wanting to kill police were not a call to attack the United States. He and six militia members were cleared Tuesday of conspiracy charges. Gun charges were all that remained for Stone, 51, and Joshua Stone, 23, of Lenawee County, Mich., after U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts said prosecutors had failed to present evidence of a plan to go to war against law enforcement and federal authorities.

CALIFORNIA: Student killed by police

Oscar Carrillo called 911 to say two young men had robbed him of his computer and backpack, one of them pointing a gun in his face. Police caught up with two teens they believed were the thieves in a Pasadena alleyway. College student Kendrec McDade, 19, made a move at his waistband and an officer opened fire, killing him, authorities said. No weapons or the stolen items have been found. Police are laying part of the blame on Carrillo, who they say admitted that he lied about the men being armed.
