OHIO: Dad denies cancer kid's trip

A 4-year-old girl who went through two years of cancer treatments isn't being allowed to go on a Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World because her father said she's in remission and children who are sicker than she should go. McKenna May of Haskins, Ohio, had the trip postponed twice while undergoing treatment for leukemia and was to go in August when the father refused to sign off on it. McKenna's parents never married. Her mother and grandmother are collecting donations to pay for the trip on their own. Money has poured in since their story spread.


ARIZONA: Sheriff's trial begins

Sheriff Joe Arpaio's anti-illegal immigration patrols took center stage in federal court Thursday as a group of Latinos set out to prove that his deputies racially profiled them as part of a systemic policy of discrimination. A lawyer for the plaintiffs said evidence will show Arpaio and his deputies discriminated. "It's our view that the problem starts at the top," attorney Stan Young said. Said Tim Casey, defending Arpaio, "Race and ethnicity had nothing to do with the traffic stops."


TENNESSEE: Too late for Ramadan

Muslims who won a court battle to occupy their new mosque learned Thursday they won't be able to begin worshipping there for the start of Ramadan because construction work will take two more weeks. Still, members of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro were celebrating their legal victory after being buffeted for two years by a lawsuit in which they had no say.
