WASHINGTON: Manning court martial urged

An Army intelligence analyst suspected of leaking thousands of classified U.S. government files to Julian Assange's anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks should be court-martialed Lt. Col. Paul Almanza recommended Thursday. Almanza, after reviewing evidence from a weeklong hearing in December, told the General Court Martial Convening Authority that Pfc. Bradley Manning should be prosecuted on all 22 charges presented. He is accused of downloading 700,000 classified or confidential files while serving in Iraq.

ALASKA: And there's still more snow!

The worst winter anyone can remember has piled snow so high people can't see out the windows, kept a tanker in waters from delivering fuel on time to Nome and turned snow-packed roofs into sled runs. Alaskans awoke Thursday to more snow. Twenty-six feet have fallen in Valdez since November and more than 172 inches in the nearby fishing community of Cordova. In the Midwest, meanwhile, an unusually mild winter finally gave way to the first big snowstorm of the season Thursday. Several inches of snow fell on western Wisconsin and Iowa before moving east into Milwaukee, St. Louis and Chicago.

NEBRASKA: A comeback by Kerrey?

Bob Kerrey is considering an improbable comeback run for his old Senate seat, although even he rates it a long shot. "Obama's going to top the ticket, and he's probably going to be unpopular. So I'd say the odds are probably not good," he told The Associated Press. Kerrey, 68, is not the boyish figure who was elected governor in 1982. But he is seen as Democrats' only hope of keeping the seat being vacated by Ben Nelson.
